Populations Served
AIRS residents are all very low-income and living with or at risk of HIV/AIDS. 98% of our residents are formerly homeless. All of our residents are long-term residents of Baltimore City. 98% percent of our residents are African American. Many have experienced crises related to addiction; they struggle financially; and suffer as a result of inadequate education (the heads of household as well as the children) which, in combination with HIV-related fatigue and illness, makes earning a living wage very difficult. Most of our residents have incomes that are less than 30% of the area median income.Three-fourths of our heads of household are now taking Protease Inhibitors and are living longer. This means that more individuals in AIRS housing program can benefit from supportive services that reconnect them to society through employment, education and community service. Most of our residents lack the skills necessary to negotiate the often complicated bureaucracies to live to the fullest and improve the lives of their children. AIRS supportive services program removes barriers to help individuals gain access to needed resources.
The Baltimore Community
Without AIRS programs, the lives for homeless HIV/AIDS affected people would be miserable, and the cost to the city would be great. Our audience is much larger than the 250 people who rent affordable housing and receive services from us-it extends to you and your neighbors, friends and family. Our city is healthier because AIRS provides an alternative to homelessness, drug use, and poverty for the most needy of Baltimore's citizens.- Permanent Housing Program: Single Adults and Families with Children
